I know many of you have been wondering what I'm doing now and how life in Michigan is going. There has been a few major changes as of late. After a year of seminary, I re-evaluated the expenses of being a full-time student and decided I wanted to spend some time making money instead of spending it. It was a rocky road and difficult decision, but I decided to stay in Michigan. Job searching is not easy in this place and economy, but I'm starting to have some success.
I recently accepted a part-time position as the worship coordinator and choir director for Blythefield Christian Reformed Church in Rockford, MI. Its a small traditional church north-east of Grand Rapids. I'm looking for housing closer to that area and hope to move in the next month. I'm still looking for more work to fill in the gaps, and have some good leads in the area of private lessons. I'm exploring the possibility of returning to seminary part-time in the spring to continue my degree.
For right now, I'm focusing on my new position at Blythefield, which I'm very excited about. The pastor is Rev. John W. Witvliet, the father of one of my favorite seminary professors. He is a wonderful preacher and I'm looking forward to working with him. The position is the merging of two former positions, the worship coordinator and the choir director separately. Interestingly enough, the now former choir director, Keith Brautigam, is a western New York native, who grew up in Chautauqua, the neighboring town of Mayville. Mayville is the town of the Lutheran church I worked at during my time at Fredonia. Talk about Dutch Bingo!
In other less exciting news, I had to make an emergency visit to the dentist earlier this week for a pretty bad toothache. It was just a tiny piece of popcorn kernel stuck in my gum from my stay at Judy's the first week of August. Thankfully it was nothing more major and caused no serious infection. I also had a cleaning and received a clean bill of health! Can you believe in over 26 years I've never had a single cavity?!
For right now, thats about the extent of my news!
